Koh Phi Phi consists of a northern and a southern island. The southern (Leh) is a National Park and can only be achieved by daytrips, overnight stays are not possible. The island consists of steep cliffs, which rise up to 200m high from the sea. The two famous bays can be visited by longtail boats, best at high tide. The world famous beach of Maya Bay has a beach, which became known as the perfect beach in the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo di Caprio.

Koh Phi Phi Don (north) is said to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world. The marvelous shape of the two bays of Tonsai and Lo Dalam forms a unique place of paradise, where hundreds of coconut palmtrees grew, before the Tsunami in 2004 washed them all away, together with the bungalows, and brought disaster to Koh Phi Phi. The place is now a newly constructedvillage with lots of shops, restaurants, agencies and guest houses. The small village of Tonsai Beach is completely rebuilt and narrow, very crowded at daytime, when daytrip visitors from Phuket and Aonang fill the streets. At night, Tonsai is a party spot.
There are no cars on Koh Phi Phi, what makes the island very special. The distances along the Ton Sai Beach and Lo Dalam Beach can easily be done by feet or motorbike taxis.

Therefore, souvenir shops and restaurants dominate the scenerie of the village at the pier. But after a short walk, the beaches are more relaxing and nice bars and beach restaurants can be found. At night, when only the overnight guests are there, the place is wonderful and provide a very chilly and relaxing atmosphere with good food, nice music and peacefulness.

The room rates in the center of Tonsai Beach are quite high, so it is advisable to look for a hotel resort a bit away from the spot.

With the longtail boats one can explore the island quite well at daytime. Other beautiful beaches at the east coats or in the bays around the island are worthwhile to visit for a day. Especially Lana Bay is a very nice and quiet place with a beautiful beach. The Lana Bay was also hit by the tsunami and the resort was completely destroyed and not rebuilt. Here you can find the happiness of being totally alone on many days of the year.

On the East Coast there are also some very nice beaches: Moodee Beach without accommodation and Loh Bakhao Beach with the luxury hotel of Phi Phi Village.

If the weather is nice, a short mountain walk to the view point on Phi Phi Don is very much recommended. From there you have a magnificent view over the two bays of Ao Loh Dalam and Ao Tonsai and more over to the island of Phi Phi Leh. Best times are early morning or late afternoon.

Getting there

Koh Phi Phi can be reached only by boat, eather from Krabi, Aonang, Phuket or Koh Lanta. The boats leave two times daily during high season from November to May.

Best time to go

From mid october to mid may the weather is mostly sunny and nice. The sea is calm. But there is a chance of some rainy days.

Accommodation

From cheap bamboo huts to 5-star hotel complexes Koh Phi Phi offers any kind of hotel resort to travellers and tourists. New hotels and guesthouses had been built between Lo Dalam Bay and Tonsai Bay. Some resorts are located along Tonsai Beach, others can be found in very beautiful places on the east coast, especially the luxury ones. The Phi Phi Island Village Resort & Spa is a real paradise place and uniquely beautiful concerning architecture and location. The most luxury resort on Phi Phi island is the Zeavola Resort on the northern Tip of the island, far away from the daily hustle at Tonsai Bay. A special tip for travellers without demands on comfort: cheap and simple cottages can be rented from local Thai people near Lana Bay.
